William Smith Wysong III

William “Bill” Smith Wysong, III of the St. Clara community departed this life Friday, March 27th, 2015 at the United Hospital Center due to unexpected illness. He was born on February 22, 1927 in Charlestown, WV, a son of the late George Kearsley and Judith Thomas Wysong. He was united in marriage to Hazel Gallien on August 26th, 1950 who survives in Clarksburg Nursing & Rehabilitation Center located at 801 Davisson Run Road, Clarksburg, WV. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, William Smith Wysong, Jr. and wife Julia, Richardson, TX and Forrest Gallien Wysong and wife Laura, Boulder, CO; four grandchildren, Cole, Jack, Dylan and Ava Wysong; one sister Frances Keyser, Charlestown, WV; and by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, George Kearsley Wysong, Jr.; and three sisters, Elizabeth Wysong, Lilly Cain and Juju Cofer. Mr. Wysong was a lifelong educator, earning his undergraduate degree from Shepherd College and completing graduate studies from George Washington University in Washington, DC. He retired with 30 years of service as a principal from the Arlington County Public School System and moved to Doddridge County with his wife Hazel to enjoy retirement at Saint Clara. Bill was a World War II Veteran serving his country as a part of the US Army. As much as he enjoyed the quiet country life, he continued to take an active role in his community. Bill shared many of his talents by volunteering service to the Farm Bureau, United Way tax preparation for senior citizens, the Doddridge County Library Board, Adopt a High-Way, Lions Club and many other organizations. Bill was a kind and gentle person who loved the Lord and his family; he was an active member of the St. Johannes Lutheran Church, and was admired and respected by all who knew him. He was a remarkable person, a devoted husband, a role model father and a beloved grandfather who will be deeply missed. Mr. Wysong’s request for cremation will be honored. Friends will be received at the Spurgeon Funeral Home, 212 Front Street, West Union on Thursday April 2, 2015 from 5PM to 8PM. The memorial service will be conducted Saturday April 4th at 11AM at St. Johannes Lutheran Church Saint Clara, where Mr. and Mrs. Wysong were married 65 years ago. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the kind friends and neighbor during their retirement years in Doddridge, CO. and at St. Clara, with special thanks to Pastor Linda Alexander, Pastor Neilson St. Johannes, minister, and to Mrs. Maryann Shaffer, for all the loving continued care given to our parents. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Doddridge County Public Library, 117 Court St., West Union, WV 26456.
